 GRAFTING WEEKEND AT COTEHELE

With the winter solstice behind us and our wassail hats hung up for another year, it’s the time of year for pruning the apple trees and grafting new ones. With that in mind we have a Grafting Weekend, this weekend, 14th and 15th February. Coincidently, it’s also Valentine’s day on Saturday so what better gift for your sweetheart than one you grafted yourself or better yet, one you grafted together.

Here’s how the event works…

Step one: Choose your apple variety We will have over 20 local apple varieties for you to choose from, so whether you want a eating, cooking or cider apple, there will be a variety right for you. Graft material is £1 per stem.

Step two: Choose your rootstock  Once you’ve chosen your variety you can decide how big you want your tree to grow by choosing a rootstock. So whether you want a small tree for the garden or large tree to plant in an orchard we’ll have a rootstock for you. For those of you that know your rootstocks we’ll have M9 (dwarf), MM106 (Semi-vigorous) and M25 (Vigorous), all £2 each.

Step three: Graft them together!

Throughout the day we will have a programme of rolling workshops where we will provide a brief tutorial on grafting your rootstock and variety together to create your very own apple tree. There’s no need to book, just turn up, the workshop cost £2 and is limited to two trees per person. This year’s event has moved out of the marquees and into warmth of the bookshop and open between 11am and 4pm. Please enter through reception where normal admission fee’s apply, National Trust members benefit from free entry. Grafting workshops have an age restriction of 16+.

Kind Regards
